Starbucks | Earth Day Reusable Cup
DIGITAL/SOCIAL, ANIMATION, VIRAL, AWARD-WINNING, CREATIVE DIRECTION, PROBLEM-SOLVING
Whether it’s Venti, Grande, or some other Italian word to denote size (like the Mammoth ‘Trenta’!), Starbucks is aware they use a lot of cups. But hey, I gotta have my caffeine.
BBDO asked us to come up with an idea for Earth Day that would champion the Starbucks $1 reusable cup. It’s always been at the checkout, made out of recycled plastic, and looks just like a Starbucks paper cup.
Freelance Art Director, Sam Sitt, and I wanted to show the power of using just one cup over and over and over.
Our idea? We’re both fans of old school animation – the kind that’s made one frame at a time. So we thought – let’s use the same cup over and over to make a film. Head Gear Animation drew, and re-drew, on the cup 24 times for each second of the film to give us ‘Beatbox Bird’.
‘Single Cup Films’ was born. We had visions of making it a series and even inviting people to make their own and send them in, culminating with a mini online film festival. Alas, budgets.
Concept to final product in less than two weeks. Meaning we drank a lot of coffee to make it happen.
Award-Winning, and featured in various ‘Ads of the Day’ during its run.
